2319: Between Races

Hey Friends,
I’ve been syncing my posting rhythm to the F1 calendar. When they lift, I lift. During the latest break, I noticed something else: my thumb has developed a strong relationship with the snooze button. I’m usually up at dawn, shake off the grogginess, and go. Back when I had classes Monday through Friday, the structure did half the work for me. Bedtimes were reasonable because they had to be.
Four months out of school and living at home, the routine hasn’t found its old shape. Maybe it’s evolving. Maybe this version is the one that fits right now. It isn’t a downgrade. It’s an adaptation. The discipline that got me here hasn’t vanished just because the calendar looks different; it’s learning a new tempo.
Whenever I’m home, sleep becomes ambient. Couch, chair, back seat of a car, and my body clocks out anywhere reasonably soft. There’s comfort in that. I value being around my family in a way that doesn’t need a productivity report. It’s a different kind of presence: less sprint, more steady idle.
This week turned into a quiet reset. My half-marathon plan called for recovery, so I went from about 20 miles down to 7–10. It’s surprising how generous a body can feel when you finally give it what it has been asking for. Fewer miles, simpler days, and enough margin to play the game without negotiating with guilt. The world didn’t end. It exhaled.
I don’t think I’m losing my edge. I’m sharpening it at a slower RPM and letting rest do its unglamorous work. Routines don’t need to be monuments. They can be living things that molt and refit, especially in transitional seasons. When the lights go green again (on track, in school, or wherever), I want to launch from a place that is rested, honest, and aligned—not just caffeinated.
For now, I’m letting this intermission count. Between races is still part of the race.
Peace,
Zechariah Davis
