2319: End-Game

Top of the morning,

In video game terminology, the "end-game" is the point where you've completed the main story and side quests, unlocking challenging new missions designed to test your mastery. It's where true skill shines, where customization and strategic builds become crucial. This is the stage of ultimate creativity and innovation—where players embrace unique paths to conquer obstacles.

Life mirrors this video game structure more closely than we might realize. From ages 0-18, we're navigating our main story, laying the groundwork with foundational education, forming our first friendships, and perhaps exploring initial romantic relationships. It’s a time of critical character development. Then come the side quests (18+):secondary education, college, vocational training, entrepreneurship, or entering the workforce. Here we build the foundations of our careers. Ideally, after completing these quests, we arrive at life's "end-game," comparable to psychologist Erik Erikson’s stage of Intimacy vs. Isolation (ages 18-40). This stage is defined by crucial developmental milestones and personal growth, and in many ways, it truly marks the beginning of our most significant challenges.

However, a common misconception at this stage is believing that once we've reached the "end-game," our work is done. But there's no definitive blueprint to life's end-game; we build it ourselves, brick by brick, navigating trial and error continuously. At this stage, we experiment with our "builds"—the strategies and approaches we use to achieve our goals. Often, we look to role models and idols, hoping to replicate their path. Yet it's important to realize that while inspiration is valuable, our individual journeys are inherently unique.

A funny story from 2020 illustrates this point perfectly. At the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, gaming surged in popularity, drawing even casual gamers into its fold. My cousin Kendall and I, longtime NBA 2K enthusiasts, seized this opportunity to dive deeper into NBA 2K20, intrigued by its new archetype builds. Eager to dominate, I scoured Reddit and YouTube for the ultimate "meta" archetype. After creating what I believed was an unbeatable build, I felt confident—until I went online. Against real players, my build failed spectacularly; easy dunks and layups became impossible. Frustrated, I stubbornly tried forcing myself to adapt. Ultimately, I realized my mistake: I'd taken someone else's build at face value without adapting it to my own style.

Life often tempts us to quickly adopt a "successful" strategy or path simply because it worked for someone else. Seeing peers or role models succeed can pressure us to rush our own journey. But the truth is, success isn't one-size-fits-all. Everyone’s path to their personal "meta" build involves trial, error, persistence, and authenticity. Recognizing the uniqueness of our journeys empowers us to build something genuinely suited to our individual strengths.

As we navigate these dog days of summer, remember to embrace exactly who you are. Take inspiration from others but never dim your own light. Your individuality, with all the unique skills and personality you bring, is precisely what you need for your journey ahead.

Peace,

Zechariah Davis,
