2319: Get lifted

2319: Get lifted

I almost decided to hold off on running the half marathon. My original running partner, Ahmad Wilson, wasn’t there, and I’ve learned so much from him that I could honestly write a book just on our conversations. Instead of giving you the whole book, I’ll give you the lesson that matters here.

Back in January, I could barely make it through a single mile. But I knew I wanted to stretch my mind in a way I never had before. I kept showing up, pushing past the Walmart landmark on my route, and eventually made it to 2 miles. I thought, “forget it—I hit 2 miles, why not 3?” Soon I ran 3 miles, completed a 5K, and before I could celebrate, Ahmad hit me with, “Bro, how about a 10K?”

I thought I might be cooked, but I had someone beside me who believed in me more than I believed in myself. Running with him has given me more than miles—it’s given me friendship, accountability, and belief. Now we’re here, staring at half-marathon training.

My plan: train around an 8:30 per mile pace, maybe race closer to 7:45–8:00. It’s exciting, but honestly, I don’t see it as a challenge anymore. Running has become love. It’s community. It’s life-giving. It’s friendly competition, yes, but mostly it’s support and accountability. Every week I’ll share updates—distances, reflections, weak spots I’m working on. But the big goal is simple: complete 13.1 miles.

On the non-running front, Formula 1 returns this weekend with the Dutch Grand Prix—Sunday at 8 AM CST. My predictions:

  • Qualifying: Lando Norris first, Lewis Hamilton second, Oscar Piastri third.
  • Finishing order: the same. We’ll see if I’m right.

One last thought I’ve been sitting with this week: we’re all human, and we all carry emotions and perspectives shaped by different journeys. No point of view is “greater” than another—it’s simply theirs. Listening without judgment opens doors. Sometimes just hearing someone else’s perspective is enough to lift you higher, to show you truths you hadn’t seen before.

It takes more effort to tear someone down than it does to lift them up. Choose the lift.

Peace,

Zechariah Davis
