2319: College Days Swiftly Pass
Hey Friends,
This week's post was inspired by my closest cousin as we caught up on our eventful past two weeks. During this time, both of us successfully completed our studies at prestigious college institutions. I proudly graduated from Tougaloo College, a Historically Black College/University situated in Jackson, MS. Meanwhile, my cousin graduated from Hampton University, an HBCU located in Hampton, Virginia, further up the east coast.
College was a winding road, but it was undoubtedly worth it. I can vividly recall the orientation where I first met my closest friend, who would later become my fraternity brother. During that time, we had the opportunity to sit down with the most renowned professor in the natural science department. She was a biology professor who had gained a reputation as a "career detour expert," albeit not in a positive sense. While there were certainly success stories of students demonstrating resilience and achieving their desired grades in her class, it was the negative experiences that tended to stick with you.
There was something about her tests that put everyone on edge. Each test consisted solely of short or long answer questions, without any multiple-choice options. You may wonder, what's the issue with that? Well, we're not dealing with mathematics here; we're discussing intricate biology. This was just Biology 101, yet it was taught at the cellular biology level, which, at some institutions, is a course offered at the 400 level. Consequently, it was clear that we had to make a decision regarding our level of commitment to this biology endeavor.
Both my closest friend and I were fully aware that pursuing pre-med and pre-vet paths, respectively, was our only option. That particular semester stands out from all others as I can hardly recall doing anything other than studying for her class. Snapchat memories occasionally resurface, reminding me of the countless hours spent sitting at my desk at home or in the library, fully immersed in my studies. To say it was life-changing would be an understatement. Throughout that challenging period, my friend and I supported each other, holding ourselves accountable then and continuing to do so now.
Undoubtedly, the power of having a study or accountability partner is immensely beneficial when navigating through the toughest of times.
