Hey Friends,

I apologize for the delay in my newsletters. To be completely honest, I was enjoying the last week of my winter break and decided to give myself a week off. I don't intend to make this a habit, but we're back in Carbondale, IL after an eventful winter weather experience in the South. This included a journey on an interstate with only one functional lane, traveling at forty miles per hour for four and a half hours. I won't dwell on the lack of road treatment, but it certainly made for a memorable experience. Let's dive into it.

Classes were scheduled to start on Tuesday, January 16th, 2024. My sister and I initially planned to leave on the morning of Sunday, January 14th. This would give us plenty of time to travel in daylight. We left Madison, MS, and all was smooth until we reached Water Valley, MS. Snow began to fall – the weather that was forecasted for the next day decided to arrive early. Initially, we thought it might let up. I honestly believed it was just a passing phase. It wasn’t. As the snow hit my windshield, it immediately turned to ice. My initial reaction was simply, "Oh." We took the next exit and, after a family phone call filled with laughter about the unexpected weather, we decided to call our family in Memphis. By then, Memphis had about 4 inches of snow on the ground. The decision was clear; we turned around and headed back to Madison. By the time we returned, the interstate we had just left was covered in snow. It felt like divine intervention; who knows what would have happened if we had stayed on the road.

Mississippi doesn’t have road-clearing equipment, so all the snowfall remained until nature decided otherwise. We ended up staying at home for an extra two days, leaving on Wednesday. By then, only one lane of the interstate was free of ice. The sun was out, and temperatures were nearing the freezing point, so we set out and safely arrived in Carbondale. It was quite the experience, but here’s what I took away from it:

  1. Expect the Unexpected: No matter how much you plan, things may not go as expected. At the moment, I was frustrated that all my travel plans fell apart. However, I've come to realize that there are no real mistakes, just lessons, and I'm learning to accept that.
  2. Embrace Joy and Laughter: In the end, I had more time to spend with my family, which is precious now that we don't see each other as often. And who else would appreciate my corny jokes?
  3. Cultivate Gratitude: Be thankful for each day. You woke up this morning and have made it this far. I am grateful for you and hope today brings you joy.

Wishing you all a wonderful day,

Peace,

Zechariah Davis
